I have not been around for a very long time. Roger Smith just told me of Mr Gilman's passing. I was not friend. However, I was a big fan. I recall the advice he gave a young John Astarita, "Whenever it is your last chance to pull, sit." He was one of the most talented drivers i ever watched. In his later years, I would see him at Rochester and all the Maine fairs. He always nodded hello. He always

Dear Mark and Cathy,
I just heard about Eddie. He sure was a good guy. I always remember him training the horses on the track at the farm. I would be out by the chickens and we would usually just give a quick wave to each other. I saw him run at the Rochester Fair one year and he won the race. He had the most pleasing personality. I don't ever remember him getting upset. Those were some great days

Our condolences are offered for the Gilman family. All of the "Harness Horse racing families" were like one big family. My Dad, James L. Phalen, who passed away in 1947 was a friend and competator of Eddies Dad, Danny Gilman. Most of the "old timers" and a lot of the younger generation have gone to their resting place. The memories are special. I am sure that Eddie is in good company, and they are all hashing over every race that they drove in, and enjoying it.

We raced with Eddie in a lot of the fairs and throughout Maine and N.H.. He drove some of our horses as well. This guy had the biggest smile and great personality in the racing business. He will be missed by all the horsemen and certainly his family. I'm sure he will be going to the Golden Starting Gate" shortly.

Eddie was the classic New England horseman. He had the respect of all the horsemen and rightly so. He will be greatly missed. Condolences to his family - may he Rest In Peace. Carol Malcolm, Pompano Beach, FL

Eddie Gilman was a GREAT driver before the day of shiny helmets, $6000.00 racebikes & handholds set behind your back. RIP Eddie & have fun behind the gate again with Nib Abbott!

Eddie was a wonderful person. He drove for us a few times after my husband had a heart attack. You couldn't ask for a nicer person or a better driver. RIP dear Eddie
